Today I want to share information with you regarding something you’ve probably heard about. It’s called COVID-19, or coronavirus. It is a new respiratory disease, or disease that impacts someone’s lungs and ability to breathe. It can spread from person-to-person and is highly contagious. There is currently no vaccine or treatment for COVID-19. The main symptoms are cough, fever, and shortness of breath (trouble breathing).
This information can make it seem scary. And while we do need to take it seriously, there are some things we can do to make it less scary. That’s what I want to share with you today.
When we take care of ourselves, our families, and our communities, we are going to do a lot to make ourselves and our communities a lot safer.
1. Wash your hands often. This is the best way to stay healthy!
2. Cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
3. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth
4. Stay away from people who are sick.
5. If you or someone in your family is sick, stay home! Call your doctor.
6. Clean surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, toilets, and countertops regularly.
7. Try to keep 6 feet (2 meters) distance between yourself and other people.
8. Avoid any gatherings of more than 3 people, and make sure that no one joins you if they are sick at all.
That means excluding anyone with any fever, congestion, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, diarrhea, or sudden loss of smell or taste.
Adults over 60 and those who have medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes or lung disease are most at risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. These individuals should take extra precautions to reduce their risk of getting sick with the disease, and if you live with someone in these risk categories, you should be careful too. This may include stocking up on supplies, filling multiple months of prescriptions, taking everyday precautions like proper hand washing, limiting close contact with others – especially those who may be sick, avoiding all crowds and staying home as much as possible.
For those concerned about symptoms like cough, fever, or other minor respiratory problems, call your health care provider. If you don’t have one you can call the local health department “Hotline” at 615-862-7777. Do not go to the emergency room unless you are injured or are very sick and think you require urgent care. Emergency rooms need to be able to serve those with the most critical needs without putting the health of the patients, healthcare workers and the general public at further risk. However, if someone does have an emergency, they should still go to the hospital.
